alt.Youth is an exciting new program designed for at-risk youth. The program goes beyond training youth about business to provide them with the opportunity and resources needed to actually start and manage their own businesses. The program is run by alt.Consulting, a non-profit organization that provides business management consulting to minority-owned, women-owned and rural-based businesses. To be selected for the program, students had to complete an application, write an essay about why they wanted to participate in alt.Youth and submit a letter of recommendation. There were no grade or coursework prerequisites, but students had to express sincere interest in the program and participate in a character interview. In addition to learning about entrepreneurship during this summer's sessions, the students will learn job readiness skills and money (debt/credit) management skills. They will also learn how to conduct industry research, do a pricing analysis and determine income projections. alt.Youth is also providing the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) for participants. This testing can be used to aid students in acquiring additional academic assistance. In addition, the program also affords students the opportunity to apply for free college credit hours from Christian Brothers University. Finally, if a student decides to pursue opening a business as part of this program, he or she can apply for a start-up equity investment from alt.Consulting. The program starts on Monday, June 8 and lasts the entire summer. The students' experience includes classroom time, workshops, individual training and presentations from guest speakers, such as bankers and local entrepreneurs, who will talk to the participants about their own business experiences.
