The Women's Foundation joined Memphis Women's Political Caucus and Memphis Area Women's Council in a historical event to honor female state representatives. Nearly 100 gathered on Wednesday, October 15, to witness the recognition of six women elected to represent Shelby County at the state level.Present for this occasion were state legislators of the 105th General Assembly from the House of Representatives and the Senate Speaker Pro-Tempore Representative Lois Deberry, Senator Beverly Marrero, Representative Jeanne Richardson and Representative Karen Camper.

Each representative expressed their appreciation and encouraged women to consider running for office in the future. Now is one of the most crucial times for women to be at the table in strong numbers to ensure that the decisions made at all levels of government represent the needs of those living at or below the poverty level. Women in government must make sure to take care of those whose voices are not heard and are most vulnerable during hard economic times.

Also in attendance was Kim McMillan, former State Representative and former Chief of Staff for Governor Bredesen. McMillan was recognized by her electoral peers for her leadership in Nashville as a true advocate for poverty reduction in the state of Tennessee.

The Memphis Women Political Caucus mission is to promote full and equal participation of women in government and political parties. The Caucus encourages women to seek public office, whether elected or appointed. The Caucus also supports measures that will open up economic and political opportunities for women. Caucus Chairman Janna Herbison was joined by officers Ginger Ralston and Gloria Kahn. Representing the Memphis Area Womens Council were Executive Director Deborah Clubb, Board Chair Sonja White and additional board members.

The Womens Foundation is pleased to be a collaborating partner with these two organizations that support our mission through their work on social justice and policy, stated Anita Vaughn, WFGM Board Chair. For more information about the Caucus, visit http://www.tennesseewpc.com/.
